Batavia, New York  is centrally located between Buffalo and Rochester, as well as to the various towns and villages in western New York.  For over 150 years it  has been a desirable place for business, development and to live.

Batavia has the advantage of four major state highways, including an exit (48A) on the New York State Thruway.  These thoroughfares have over 45,000 vehicles daily and provide easy access for shoppers, tourists and businesses to the region.

Downtown Batavia has over 189 retail stores,  restaurants, entertainment, financial and other professional businesses that provide a variety of specialty products and services to the area.  It is also the seat of government for Genesee County.

The Batavia Business Improvement Districts' downtown economic development and promotional programs, historic structures, safe environment, attractive streetscape, upper level housing and surrounding neighborhoods provide the ideal marketplace for family owned and national businesses.  It is a great place to shop, start a business and to live.

The Vision...

In 1998, ninety downtown business owners and city officials established the Batavia Business Improvement District (B.I.D) .  It is an independent non-profit 501 (C)(6) organization made up of property owners and tenants dedicated to the economic and cultural revitalization of downtown Batavia, NY.

To accomplish its mission of revitalizing and promoting downtown, the B.I.D. developed a proactive plan.  This focuses on:

  • Retaining and expanding existing  businesses.
  • Attracting new niche retailers, artists and designers, restaurants and entertainment, high technology, and professional services.
  • Create greater visiblity through events and marketing.
  • Increase residential housing units.

The District's growth is attributed to...

  • A safe, clean and attractive environment for pedestrians.
  • Over $5.5 million in storefront and streetscape improvements.
  • Economic incentives for businesses, i.e. facade improvement grants.and other grant/ loan funds
  • Cooperative marketing and promotion for Batavia and the western New York marketplace.

Future initiatives include:

  • Soliciting more retail business.
  • Addtional facade and streetscape improvement projects.
  • New construction
  • Development of a hotel & conference center
  • Development of an arts & cultural center / space
