For over 200 years, starting with the Holland Land Company in 1801, Batavia New York has been a safe and pleasant place to live and a center for business and development.  This historic community, which developed 3.2 million aces of western New York, is centrally located between Buffalo and Rochester and within fifty minutes of the various towns and villages in the region.

The Downtown Batavia Business Improvement District has over 179 retail speciality retail stores, restaurants, professional businesses that provide a variety of unique products and services to
the region.  Downtown is alive with activities and events for all ages.

There are... free concerts and movies in historic Jackson Square, a Downtown Public Market with local produce, a Summer in the City Festival with food, entertainment and over 350 classic cars, a Fall Wine Walk and holiday activities for everyone.

The District provides the ideal environment for families, business and living.  It has unique stores, historic structures, a safe environment, attractive streetscapes, trendy upper level housing and attractive neighborhoods. These elements provide the perfect marketplace for shoppers, entrepreneurs, artists and those who enjoy urban living.

The downtown vision...

In March 1998, a group of business owners and city officials decided decided our historic downtown needed to change and established the Batavia Business Improvement District (B.I.D) . It was created as an independent non-profit 501 (C)(6) organization made up of property owners and tenants dedicated to economic and cultural revitalization.

Its mission is a proactive approach to revitalizing and promoting downtown:

  • Retaining and expanding existing  businesses.
  • Attracting new niche retailers, artists and designers, restaurants and entertainment, high tech, and professional services.
  • Greater visiblity through events and marketing.
  • Increase the number of residential housing units.

The district's growth is attributed to...

  • A safe, clean and attractive environment for pedestrians and residents.
  • Over $5.5 million in storefront and streetscape improvements.
  • Economic incentives for businesses, i.e. facade improvement grants, and other grant/ loan programs.
  • Cooperative marketing and promotion for Batavia and the western New York marketplace.

Future initiatives include:

  • Soliciting more retail business.
  • Addtional facade and streetscape improvement projects.
  • New construction
  • Development of a hotel & conference center
  • Development of an arts & cultural center / space

Pavement Rehabilitation Project Finished In November

The NYS Department of Transportation has begun the repair and resurfacing of 1.7 miles of Ellicott Street  (this includes a major section of the BID) in Batavia, New York.

Scope of work:  asphalt pavement repairs, pavement milling 2.5 inch depth, 2 inch asphalt overlay, new pavement markings and cleaning of drainage structures.  The pavement markings are planned to change the traffic pattern from 4 lanes to 3 lanes, with parking on both sides of the road.

Lane Closures:  Ellicott Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction during pavement repair and reconstruction.  Day and night time lane closures are planned for the project.  Access to businesses will be given the highest priority. The project has successfully been completed in November 2010.
